Can Zyrtec Make Me Feel Drowsy
Studies in adults show that about 14% of patients experienced somnolence, or drowsiness, and studies in children show that about 4% of patients experienced somnolence while on ZYRTEC®.
Most adult studies also show that the percentage of patients on ZYRTEC® 10 mg reporting somnolence decreased each week.*
While everyone reacts differently to medication, drowsiness may occur with ZYRTEC® and could lessen over time. See Zyrtec® label warnings section.
*Majority of studies were 2 weeks in duration.
Is It Safe To Take Otc Allergy Medications Every Day
Generally, yesthough you should consult with your healthcare provider for guidance. Nasal steroid sprays may take a few weeks to become effective. If you have occasional symptoms, it is okay to take antihistamines as needed, following the package directions.
If your allergy symptoms persist, you may have a sinus infection. Over-the-counter medications for sinusitis are similar to allergy treatments but in cases of a bacterial infection, a provider will prescribe an antibiotic, and possibly a corticosteroid.

The Best Of Both Antihistamines And Decongestants
Certain OTC allergy medications like Allegra Allergy contain both an antihistamine and decongestant to relieve multiple symptoms at once. These combination drugs can be an effective treatment for people who experience nasal congestion or trouble breathing in addition to other common allergies like hay fever, itchy skin, scratchy throat, hives, or itchy eyes.
Examples of Combination Over the Counter Allergy Medications
Side Effects of Combination Medications
Due to the fact that OTC allergy combination medications typically include both antihistamines and decongestants, patients can experience side effects associated with either treatment. While these combination medications are non-drowsy and drowsiness is unlikely, it can still occur, as can insomnia or irritability and an increase in blood pressure.

Allergy Medication For Toddlers & Children
Managing your kids allergies can sometimes feel like a balancing act. Though you want to give your child medication for symptom relief, you may feel concerned about keeping him/her safe and healthy during the process.
Knowing how and when to administer your kids medication is vital for managing allergies. This starts with fully understanding allergy medication for toddlers and children, including risks, dosage and more. To help you out, our experts at Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center have put together key information about allergy medication for children.
Note: All allergy medication should be prescribed by a board-certified allergist and administered according to official directions. Be sure to ask your doctor about your childs medication if you have questions or are unsure how to proceed.
Best At Night: Aspirin
For years a low daily dose of aspirin was recommended to thin the blood and lower your risk of heart attack and stroke, but recent guidelines now say its unnecessary, except for in those who have had heart attacks or stent procedures. But if youre in the latter group and your doctor recommends continuing, be sure to take your dose at night instead of in the morning. According to Dutch researchers, a nighttime dose drops platelet levels in the morning when they naturally surgeand when cardiac incidents are three times more likely to occur.

Dont Take Decongestants Year
Sudafed and similar drugs fight congestion and pressure by causing the blood vessels to constrict. However, they can also cause agitation, interfere with sleep, and contribute to cardiovascular issues such as high blood pressure, Macy says. Additionally, prolonged use of decongestant nasal sprays can actually make stuffiness worse, an effect known as rebound congestion. Because of these side effects, decongestants shouldnt be used for more than a few days at a time.
Another thing to keep in mind, Macy says, is that if youre experiencing congestion and sinus pressure without other symptoms like itching and sneezing, its probably not caused by allergies. Other treatable conditions including migraines, infections, and nasal polyps, may actually be to blame.
How Much Allergy Medication Should I Be Taking
Most adults can easily take the full strength dosage of any antihistamine, says Dr. Passer.
Kids may start by taking a smaller dosage at first, but if that smaller dose is not effective, I have no problem pushing that dose to the same adult dosage, she says. Fatigue is the first side effect to look for in these cases.

If Your Allergy Symptoms Worsen See A Doctor
“A long-acting antihistamine, either alone or in combination with a nasal steroid spray, will relieve most people’s allergy symptoms,” says Dr. Hays.
If you’re taking over-the-counter allergy medicines and your symptoms continue or worsen, it may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as chronic sinus infections or sinus polyps. Follow up with your doctor if your symptoms are serious or frequent.
Reduce Your Reaction To Allergens
Still not finding sufficient relief from seasonal allergy symptoms, and/or have year-round allergies that are very bothersome? You might find immunotherapy useful.
This prescription treatment involves exposing you to ever-larger amounts of allergens, gradually increasing your tolerance.
Traditional immunotherapy is delivered via regular shotsoften for three to five yearsand can help with seasonal and year-round allergens. Over 80 percent of the time, people experience relief, Hong says. The shots carry a small risk of a severe allergic reaction, so youll need to have them in a doctors office.
If your seasonal allergies are to grasses and/or youre allergic to dust mites, you might look into a newer prescription option: sublingual immunotherapy, or SLIT. Here, you typically place a dissolvable tablet containing purified extracts of allergens under your tongue.
Currently, four treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration are available: Odactra, for house dust mite allergies, Oralair, for five different grass pollens, Grastek, for Timothy grass allergies, and Ragwitek, for ragweed allergies.
This is a really good option for people who are allergic to these types of pollen but arent seeing improvement on nasal and antihistamine sprays, or develop other complications from these allergies, such as sinus infections or asthma, Hong says.

How Often Can You Take Allergy Medication
How often you can take allergy medicine depends on what type youre taking. Some kinds, like Benadryl, can be taken every 4-6 hours, while others can be taken every 12-24 hours. For example, Allegra comes in both 12-hour and 24-hour formulations. Always check the directions on the label before taking allergy medication to ensure you are taking the right dosage.
Avoid Foods That Can Cause A Reaction
People with seasonal allergies often have antibodies that can cause their immune system to overreact to certain foods. This phenomenon is called cross-reactivity. For instance, if youre allergic to ragweed, you may experience allergy symptoms like itching on your lips, tongue, and mouth if you eat bananas, melons, cucumber, or zucchini, Dykewicz says. If youre allergic to birch tree pollen, you may have allergy symptoms after eating apples, pears, peaches, hazelnuts, kiwi, carrots, or celery. These problems may only occur during the season in which your allergies are at their worst.
Regardless of the season, help minimize your allergy symptoms by keeping all these triggers in mind and avoiding them as much as possible.

Dust Your Furniture Regularly
Go a week without vacuuming or dusting your furniture, especially in a sunny well lit room and youll notice a film of dust collecting on bedside tables, dresser drawers and any other surface that doesnt get touched often.
If you dont have a regular cleaning routine that includes dusting and often wake up with a stuffy nose, dust mites may be to blame. A dust mite allergy is more common than you might realize.
You may be at higher risk for dust mites too if your bedroom decor includes large heavy drapes, lots of decorative pillows and upholstered furniture. Carpeting, shaggy rugs, stuffed animals, dolls, and books are also dust traps that need to be vacuumed often or dusted regularly.
Can You Take Two Types Of Allergy Medication Together
Depending on your symptoms, some allergy medications can be safe to use in combination. Generally, you can use an antihistamine with a decongestant .
However, you dont want to double up allergy medications. For example, you generally wouldnt want to take Claritin in the morning and Zyrtec in the evening .

Can I Share My Prescription Antihistamines With Friends Who Have Allergies
No. Even if your friend has a similar allergy, do not share your medicine. You should never share a prescription medicine with another person. Your doctor has examined you and has picked a medicine that is right only for your problem. Some antihistamines can cause serious side effects if they are given to people who are taking another medicine, or who should not take antihistamines for another reason.

How Often Should You Take Antihistamines
In addition to relieving allergy symptoms as they come up, antihistamines are also great at stoping symptoms in their tracks and preventing them from occurring in the first place . Thatâs why, for best use, you should take antihistamines every day during allergy season. According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery , taking antihistamines on a daily basis can help optimize their benefits and effects. But is this safe?
For the most part, yes. âTaken in the recommended doses, antihistamines can be taken daily, but patients should make sure they do not interact with their other medications,â Dr. Sandra Lin, a professor and vice director of the Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, told SingleCare. You just need to make sure you choose the right medication. First-generation antihistamines like Benadryl tend to have more potential side effects and interactions with medications, so theyâre not typically recommended for daily or long-term use. However, second-generation antihistamines like Zyrtec are much safer for daily use and tend to be more effective over time.

The Importance Of Diagnosing Your Kids Allergies
The first step to correctly using allergy medication is to get an expert diagnosis. Self-diagnosing your childs allergies could lead to treating the wrong condition or using the wrong medication. Its best not to risk it.
If you think your child is showing signs of pediatric allergies, schedule an appointment with a top allergist near you. This doctor will diagnose your kids symptoms and create a care plan, which will include clear directions about which medications are best for your childs situation.
Getting a proper diagnosis and care plan from an allergist is the surest way to keep your child safe from medication risks.

Consider Nasal Washing With Sinus Rinses
Sinus rinses are a popular allergy treatment that you can do at home, working well with antihistamines and nasal sprays. The neti pot may be one of the most recognizable sinus rinse products.
A neti pot can be picked up at any local drugstore or online, and typically comes with packets to mix with warm, distilled water to create a saltwater solution. Using the pot to pour the solution through your nasal cavities, you can flush out gunk and allergens to reduce swelling and ease symptoms.
Do Start Your Nasal Spray Before The Pollen Onslaught
Antihistamines are very effective against sneezing, itchy eyes, runny noses, and hives, but they dont help very much with congestion, Macy says. However, corticosteroid nasal sprays like Flonase treat stuffiness as well as other allergy symptoms. They contain lab-made versions of naturally occuring hormones that calm inflammation.
Corticosteroids can be used daily without losing their edge, Nimmagadda says. The only thing is that with intranasal steroids its important to start them early in the season, he says.
If you wait until your immune system goes to work against that dreaded pollen and your symptoms flare up, corticosteroids wont work as well. Nimmagadda likens it to fighting a blaze before it gets out of hand. If you have a small fire, its easier to put out with a garden hose, he says. If you have a large fire, when you try to use a garden hose its not going to work very well.
An even simpler remedy is to use saline washes to flush mucus and debris from your nasal passages. These solutions can be purchased at the pharmacy or made at homeand using them will likely cut down on the amount of allergy medications you need to keep your symptoms in check, Nimmagadda says.
The cheapest and best treatment you can do is to wash your nose of all the pollen allergens every morning and night, he says. One of the mainstays of my treatment regimens is the saline rinses.

When Is The Best Time To Take Your Antihistamine
When is the best time to take your antihistamine? They work best when theyre already in your system, so the night before is most efficacious, says Purvi Parikh, MD, an allergist/immunologist with the Allergy & Asthma Network. Since some antihistamines make you drowsy, its actually best to take them before bedtime.
Is it better to take allergy medicine in the morning or evening? Take Allergy Medications at Night
Many allergy medications, such as Zyrtec, are recommended every 24 hours. By taking the medication before bedtime youre more likely to get through the night without the active ingredients wearing off or becoming less effective closer to the end of the 24 hour period.
Is it better to take Zyrtec allergy medicine in the morning or at night? Whats the best time of day to take ZYRTEC®? Any time of day works. And ZYRTEC® will continue to work for 24 hours.
What symptoms do antihistamines help with? Antihistamines are medicines often used to relieve symptoms of allergies, such as hay fever, hives, conjunctivitis and reactions to insect bites or stings. Theyre also sometimes used to prevent motion sickness and as a short-term treatment for insomnia.
Will Allergy Medicine Make Me Drowsy
Older antihistamines, such as Benadryl , can cause significant side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Newer antihistamines, like Claritin , Allegra , Zyrtec , or Xyzal , are less likely to cause drowsiness, and thus may be good options for the best non-drowsy allergy medicine.
Be careful when choosing any combination product for allergies or cough and cold because many of them contain sedating antihistaminesor ingredients that may be unnecessary for allergies . Ask your pharmacist to help you choose a product that wont immediately put you to sleepand that has only the medication you need, without extra ingredients. Extra, unnecessary ingredients can cause more side effects.
